PH Nears GEA-3 Results, Eyes ASEAN Energy Leadership

The Department of Energy (DOE) is poised to announce the winning bidders for the third round of the Green Energy Auction (GEA-3) as early as Monday next week, according to DOE Undersecretary Rowena Guevara.

The results, which await the energy secretary’s final approval, will mark a significant step in advancing the Philippines’ renewable energy ambitions. The GEA-3 auction, conducted on February 11, 2025, targeted 4,650 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity, including 300 MW from impounding hydropower, 4,250 MW from pumped-storage hydropower, and 100 MW from geothermal projects. Industry insiders report that bids totaled 7,500 MW, reflecting strong investor interest.

Prominent energy firms, including subsidiaries of First Gen Corp. and San Miguel Corp., were among the qualified bidders vying for contracts. The overwhelming response underscores the Philippines’ growing appeal as a hub for renewable energy investment.

Looking ahead, the Philippines is set to chair the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2026, with energy cooperation high on the agenda. Following extensive lobbying and discussions, the country is positioned to champion the ASEAN Power Grid, a regional initiative to integrate electricity networks across member states.

The upcoming GEA-3 results and the nation’s strategic role in ASEAN signal a pivotal moment for the Philippines’ energy sector, as it balances domestic growth with regional leadership.
