Key members of the Philippine House of Representatives have met with Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in a bid to deepen understanding of nuclear energy and its potential role in the country’s energy mix.
The meeting, held at the House of Representatives, provided legislators a forum to directly engage with Grossi at a critical time as the Philippines seeks to strengthen energy security and reduce electricity costs for consumers.
“This dialogue, I hope will bring positive results and finally put nuclear energy at the top of the energy agenda. Director General Grossi’s expertise will be most valued by all of us at the legislature so as to better help us make nuclear energy a reality for the country. This will be invaluable for all Filipinos who are burdened with the high cost of electricity,” said Mark O. Cojuangco, Representative of the 2nd District of Pangasinan and chairman of the Special Committee on Nuclear Energy.
The courtesy call follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s recent reaffirmation of the administration’s commitment to strengthening nuclear regulation and international cooperation, after the signing of the Philippine Nuclear Law. Lawmakers said the dialogue with Grossi would inform policy decisions and help integrate nuclear energy as a sustainable solution to meet growing power demand.
With energy security and affordability top of mind, lawmakers emphasized that a responsible expansion of nuclear energy could support economic development while lowering electricity costs for households and industries.
The discussion highlighted the Philippine government’s ongoing efforts to evaluate nuclear power as a viable component of the nation’s energy strategy amid rising electricity prices and increasing demand for reliable baseload power.
How can nuclear energy be responsibly integrated into the Philippines’ power mix to support energy security and stable electricity costs?
