State-run Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) has signed its first framework agreement to supply small-scale liquefied natural gas (ssLNG) to the island province of Basilan, marking a major milestone in its efforts to bring cleaner and more reliable energy to off-grid areas.
The agreement was formalized through a strategic collaboration with Indonesia’s state-owned Pertamina Gas, and is seen as a key step toward improving energy access and advancing the energy transition in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
“We’re proud to announce that PNOC has signed its first framework agreement to supply small-scale LNG (ssLNG) to the island of Basilan—a major step towards ensuring energy security in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM),” PNOC president & CEO Oliver Butalid said in a statement posted on LinkedIn.
PNOC emphasized that the project aligns with its mission to expand sustainable energy solutions across the Philippines’ underserved and hard-to-reach areas.
“This groundbreaking initiative is made possible through a strategic collaboration with Pertamina Gas, Indonesia’s state-owned energy company. Together, we aim to bring cleaner, more reliable energy to underserved communities and support the broader energy transition across the region,” Butalid said.
Could small-scale LNG be a game-changer for energy access in BARMM and other remote areas?
