Prime Energy Resources Development B.V. hosted executives from Chromite Gas Holdings, Inc. (CGHI) at the Malampaya Shallow Water Platform on September 5. This visit reinforces collaboration on safety, reliability, and operational excellence in the country’s indigenous gas sector.
The visit was led by Prime Energy President and CEO Donnabel Kuizon Cruz, joined by AboitizPower President and CEO Danel Aboitiz and LNGPH COO Dominador Camu. Discussions centered on best practices in operations and collective efforts to build a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
CGHI is a joint venture formed by Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGen) and Therma NatGas Power Inc. (TNGP), a subsidiary of AboitizPower.
Prime Energy, a subsidiary of Prime Infra, operates the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project under Service Contract 38, alongside consortium partners Prime Oil & Gas Inc., UC38 LLC, and state-owned PNOC Exploration Corporation. The Malampaya project supplies around 20% of the Philippines’ electricity requirements and has generated over USD13.9 billion in government revenues since operations began more than two decades ago.
The SC 38 Consortium is currently investing USD 893 million in Malampaya Phase 4 (MP4), the largest upstream investment in the country in more than 10 years. The new drilling campaign aims to boost the supply of indigenous natural gas, with first gas expected by 2026.
This move aligns with the Philippine Natural Gas Industry Development Act (RA 12120) and a Department of Energy circular mandating that available domestic gas must be prioritized before imports. This is part of the government’s push to secure stable and affordable energy.
Do you think expanding indigenous natural gas projects like Malampaya is the best way to strengthen the Philippines’ energy security?
