REDC begins Bukidnon hydro tests while advancing PHP 10.3B project pipeline

Repower Energy Development Corp. (REDC) has started testing and commissioning its 18.2-megawatt (MW) run-of-river hydropower project in Bukidnon, which marks another step toward adding more clean energy to the Mindanao grid. The PHP 4-billion facility sits along the Pulangi River at the boundary of Valencia City and San Fernando and employed over 900 workers during its 24/7 construction phase.

Once operational, the plant is expected to generate around 130 gigawatt-hours of renewable power annually, which is enough to supply more than 54,000 households. The project also serves as REDC’s ninth operating hydropower facility and its first development in Mindanao. The company noted that much of the proceeds from its 2023 initial public offering were used to fund the Bukidnon plant.

Beyond the ongoing commissioning work, REDC continues to expand its hydropower portfolio in Luzon and Mindanao. Construction is underway for the 4.5-MW Piapi hydropower project in Quezon Province, which is targeted to achieve commercial operations by the end of 2027.

The company is also preparing to roll out four additional hydropower projects with a combined capital expenditure of PHP 10.3 billion. These developments are set to begin construction in the coming months as REDC pursues growth through both greenfield projects and acquisitions of operating plants.

With several new facilities progressing simultaneously, how do you think REDC’s growing hydropower pipeline will shape the country’s renewable energy landscape?
