Repower Energy Development Corporation (REDC) has begun construction of its 25-megawatt Pulangi IV Hydropower Project following a groundbreaking ceremony in Maramag, Bukidnon. The Php 6.3-billion run-of-river development marks the company’s next phase of renewable energy expansion in Mindanao through its subsidiary, Maramag Hydropower Corporation.
Beyond its role in strengthening the Mindanao grid, the project is expected to create local employment, with around 800 workers to be hired during construction. REDC said the initiative was designed to generate socio-economic opportunities in Maramag and neighboring towns while contributing to a more sustainable power supply for surrounding communities.
Pulangi IV will tap the downstream portion of the Pulangi River, complementing REDC’s upstream plant recently commissioned near the border of Valencia and San Fernando. Once operational, the new facility will add renewable capacity that supports long-term grid stability across Mindanao.
The groundbreaking ceremony gathered officials from the public and private sectors, including Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, DOE REMB Director Marissa Cerezo, PSALM President and CEO Dennis De la Serna, Undersecretary Sammy Young, and representatives from the National Power Corporation. Executives from Pure Energy and partner firm Tokai also joined local leaders and project stakeholders.
REDC President Eric Y. Roxas said the project aligns with national clean energy goals and the company’s broader development plans. “This groundbreaking represents the start of our second of several hydropower projects here, that will not only contribute clean and reliable energy to the Mindanao grid but will also support long-term regional development, in line with national energy goals,” he said.
How can new hydropower developments support both energy reliability and local economic growth in Mindanao?
