Power PH – Renewables to Drive 5,600 MW Surge in 2025–DOE

The Department of Energy (DOE) projects 5,632 megawatts (MW) of new power capacity to come online in the Philippines by the end of 2025, with renewable energy sources driving the majority, according to data published on March 31.

Renewables will contribute 4,232 MW, over 75% of the total, led by solar (3,455 MW) and wind (558 MW), with smaller contributions from hydropower, geothermal, and biomass. Non-renewable sources will add 1,401 MW, primarily from natural gas (880 MW) and coal (356 MW). Battery energy storage systems (BESS) will provide 400 MW to enhance grid stability.

Luzon will see 4,469 MW of new capacity, with 3,228 MW from renewables, mostly solar (2,609 MW) and wind (544 MW). Visayas expects 932 MW, predominantly renewable, with solar as the largest contributor. Mindanao anticipates 232 MW, with renewables like solar leading the mix.

Nationwide, the DOE projects 19,190 MW of committed capacity from 2025 to 2030, with 5,998 MW expected in 2026 and additional projects through 2030. The focus on solar and wind highlights the Philippines’ shift toward sustainable energy.

This expansion strengthens energy security and supports cleaner power. Indicative projects in planning could further boost renewable growth if realized.
