The Philippines has secured a seat on the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reinforcing its role in global discussions on nuclear safety, security, and the peaceful use of atomic energy.
“The Philippines’ election to the Board of Governors of the IAEA reinforces its role in shaping global policies on nuclear safety, security, and the peaceful use of atomic energy,” Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin said in a statement.
The Philippines is now one of only 35 member states represented on the Board. These member states decide on safeguards, technical cooperation, and the responsible development of nuclear technology on a worldwide scale.
This development is aligned with the Philippine Nuclear Energy Plan, which targets up to 4,800 megawatts of nuclear capacity by 2040. The Board seat also opens opportunities for the country to access technical cooperation in nuclear medicine, agriculture, food security, and energy.
According to the DOE, the Philippines’ participation in the IAEA Board will also strengthen its recognition as a responsible nuclear partner and highlight its dedication to science, innovation, and sustainable development.
What impact do you think the Philippines’ seat on the IAEA Board will have on its efforts to pursue nuclear power as part of the country’s energy mix?
