SM Fairview Solar System to Offset 4,133 Tons of CO2 Yearly, Power 44 Escalators Using the Sun

SM Supermalls has launched the country’s largest rooftop solar power system on a commercial building at SM City Fairview.

With a capacity of 3.785 megawatts peak (MWp), the system features 6,882 solar modules spread across 4.3 hectares. It will produce up to 5,960 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy each year—enough to power 44 escalators and all the mall’s perimeter lights for over two years.

The new system is expected to reduce 4,133 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, helping SM Prime Holdings advance its Net Zero 2040 goal.

SM Fairview’s solar PV system is now the largest in the mall chain, surpassing SM City Santa Rosa’s previous record of 3.088 MWp. It also builds on SM’s first mall installation at SM North EDSA in 2014, which started with 1.5 MWp.

“SM’s commitment to sustainability spans energy, water, and waste. This milestone shows how we’re scaling that commitment in our properties,” said Mr. Hans T. Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime.

The solar rollout was done in partnership with Buskowitz Energy. The installation forms part of SM Prime’s solar expansion pipeline, which now totals 73 MWp and is expected to hit 100 MWp before year-end.

Beyond power savings, the project strengthens mall operations by reducing reliance on the national grid and boosting energy resilience during peak demand and outages.

Aside from solar energy, SM Prime also integrates potable water reuse, wastewater treatment, and solid waste management into its green building practices.
