SM Prime has crossed a landmark 100-megawatt-peak (MWp) threshold in rooftop solar capacity, a milestone the Department of Energy (DOE) says significantly strengthens the private sector’s role in accelerating the Philippines’ clean energy transition.
The accomplishment was highlighted at the “Switch On to 100 MW” event on December 10 at SM City North EDSA, attended by Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin, who pointed to the milestone as an example of how visible renewable energy projects can influence everyday Filipinos.
“Clean energy becomes truly powerful when people feel its benefits where they live, work, and gather,” she said, noting that SM Prime’s installations show how sustainability can be woven into daily community life. She added that the DOE welcomes companies that help build “a healthier and more energy-secure future for all Filipinos.”
Over the years, SM Prime has steadily expanded its rooftop solar footprint, deploying 200,000 solar modules across 65 hectares of rooftops in 59 properties. Beyond the technical scale, the DOE said these systems contribute to cleaner air, improved comfort inside facilities, and greater local energy resilience—benefits that directly support national climate and energy security objectives.
Garin emphasized that milestones like these deliver national-level impacts. “Every megawatt of clean energy that comes online helps reduce our reliance on imported fuel, shields consumers from volatile energy prices, and strengthens our long-term climate commitments,” she said.
She encouraged more private sector players to pursue renewable energy and energy efficiency upgrades as the DOE reaffirmed its readiness to deepen collaboration with industry partners as renewable energy adoption grows nationwide.
With SM Prime’s latest achievement adding momentum to the sector, the agency said it remains focused on scaling clean, reliable, and community-centered energy solutions.
How can the government and private sector work together to bring renewable energy benefits to even more communities?
