Education Secretary Sonny Angara is urging greater adoption of renewable energy in schools to help alleviate the impact of extreme heat on students.

In an ABS-CBN News report, Angara said that schools equipped with solar energy systems can better sustain air conditioning, particularly in computer rooms, reducing the need for class suspensions during heat waves.

The Education Secretary added that schools with solar energy that are able to equip themselves with air conditioning experience fewer cancellations due to extreme heat.

He further emphasized that adopting renewable energy is part of the necessary shift in response to climate change.

His remarks came after extreme heat forced the suspension of classes in nearly half of Metro Manila last week as the dry season intensified.

When asked about the potential expansion of hybrid learning to address climate-related disruptions, Angara expressed support, especially for older students.

With rising temperatures posing challenges to the education sector, Angara’s call for renewable energy integration highlights its role in creating safer and more comfortable learning environments for students.

Investing in solar energy systems in schools can help mitigate climate-related class disruptions and ensure a conducive environment for education to thrive.
