The Siargao Electric Cooperative says that the cause of the power outage affecting Siargao Island since December 1 has been identified.

The cooperative revealed that the fault was traced to a 1.6-kilometer section of a submarine cable, which is now undergoing a thorough assessment after being retrieved from the seabed.

To mitigate the power shortage, a 4.4-megawatt (MW) generator was delivered to Siargao from Lanao del Norte on Wednesday.

The generator, set for commissioning on Friday, is part of a 16-MW alternative power solution aimed at supplying electricity to Siargao and Bucas Grande islands while the submarine cable is under repair.

In response to the situation, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 13 (Caraga) provided assistance to affected residents of General Luna town.

The agency distributed 8,018 ten-liter bottles of drinking water requested by the local government.

“A total of 3,048 bottles were successfully delivered on Wednesday, while the remaining 4,970 bottles were handed over to the local government unit on Thursday,” the DSWD-13 said in a statement.

The support was coordinated with the local government to address the needs of residents impacted by the ongoing outage, the agency added.
