Sweden gathered technology firms and Philippine industry representatives on December 5 at the Manila Peninsula for an event highlighting the role of energy efficiency in strengthening industrial competitiveness. The “Swedish Perspectives in Energy Efficiency” forum brought together companies, such as SKF and Atlas Copco, to discuss solutions that could help reduce power consumption in manufacturing, food and beverage, and other energy-intensive sectors.
Swedish Ambassador Anna Ferry said the initiative reflects her country’s long-term partnership with the Philippines in advancing sustainable industrial development.
“Energy efficiency is a critical factor for competitiveness and resilience. Sweden’s experience shows that industrial modernization and sustainability can go hand in hand. We are long term partners with the Philippines sharing this expertise,” she said.
Speakers noted that high electricity prices and financing gaps continue to limit wider adoption of efficiency measures in local industries. Citing recent findings from Business Sweden, the discussion pointed out that the industrial sector—particularly food and beverage and manufacturing—accounts for about 80% of industrial energy use, thus representing a major opportunity for upgrades and better procurement practices.
During a panel session, DOE Director Patrick Aquino said policy frameworks already support efficiency improvements but require coordinated action on the ground. “The Department of Energy is steadfast in driving energy efficiency as a national priority. Our policies under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act provide a strong foundation, but real impact comes when the government and industry work hand in hand to implement solutions on the ground,” he said.
Alexander Ablaza, president of the Philippine Energy Efficiency Alliance, said Energy Service Companies play a central role by providing technical capacity and financing. “Energy Service Companies are the backbone of the efficiency market. They bring technical expertise and financing solutions, allowing businesses to pay for upgrades through the savings they generate,” he said.
Representatives from Swedish firms also outlined how industry priorities are shifting toward sustainability-focused technologies. SKF’s Jesus Christopher Chan said, “Today, customers care for more than financial gains and Return On Investment—they expect integrated solutions that reduce energy use, extend equipment life, and support circularity, helping them achieve both performance and sustainability goals.”
Atlas Copco’s George Lapat added that adapting solutions to align with customers’ long-term sustainability strategies “creates lasting partnership and impact.”
The event also highlighted Sweden’s broader emphasis on innovation, with 3.5% of its GDP invested in research and development. Swedish organizations said they intend to continue working with Philippine partners to support decarbonization, competitiveness, and inclusive industrial growth.
