Tacloban rings in new year with 10-hour power outage

Power Outage

The regional capital of Tacloban and its nearby towns faced a 10-hour blackout as the new year arrived, caused by a damaged power line under the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

The unscheduled power outage began at December 31, 2024 10:11 p.m. Tuesday and lasted until 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

NGCP identified the widespread outage from a cut conductor located two meters away from the insulators along the Babatngon-Apitong 69kV line in Diit village, Tacloban City.

In its 10:15 p.m. update, NGCP stated that personnel had been dispatched to patrol the affected line, promising to “expedite the resolution of the.”

Leyte II Electric Cooperative (Leyeco II) clarified that the interruption was caused by faults in NGCP’s power lines and not in their distribution network.

Leyeco II serves 90,000 consumers across Tacloban City and the nearby towns of Palo and Babatngon in Leyte province as of the end of 2023.
