Taiwan Fructose Turns to First Gen for Reliable Clean Energy

Taiwan Fructose Co. Ltd. (Philippines), the local subsidiary of Taiwanese sweetener manufacturer Taiwan Fructose, has signed an agreement with First Gen Corporation to use renewable energy for its operations in Batangas.

Under the deal signed on August 27, First Gen will supply electricity from the Bacon-Manito (Bac-Man) geothermal complex in the Bicol region to power Taiwan Fructose’s production and logistics facility inside the First Philippine Industrial Park in Batangas. The Bac-Man facility is owned and operated by First Gen subsidiary Energy Development Corporation, the world’s largest vertically integrated geothermal company.

The Taiwan Fructose plant manufactures glucose and fructose syrups, and other sweetening products used in food, beverages, as well as health supplements for export markets.

“Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source that can run at baseload capacity which is ideal for industries that require stable 24/7 power supply with a lower carbon footprint. We are pleased to support Taiwan Fructose in its journey towards sustainability and decarbonization,” First Gen Chief Customer Engagement Officer Carlo Vega said.

First Gen, through its subsidiaries, operates 28 renewable energy plants across the country with a combined capacity of more than 1,600 megawatts. These utilize geothermal, wind, solar, and hydro resources. The Lopez-led company also holds significant stakes in four gas-fired power plants in Batangas with a total capacity of 2,017 MW in partnership with Prime Infrastructure Capital.

The company said this diversified portfolio of renewable and low-carbon facilities supports the country’s energy security and decarbonization efforts.
