The Department of Energy (DOE) should find alternative energy sources to reduce the country’s reliance on coal.
This was the order issued by President Rodrigo Duterte to DOE during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the Batasang Pambansa on Monday.
“We recognize the urgent need to ensure the sustainability and availability of resources and the development of alternative ones,” Duterte said in his national address, as quoted in a Manila Bulletin report.
“In this regard, I trust that Secretary Cusi shall fast-track also the development of renewable energy sources, and reduce dependence on the traditional energy sources such as coal,” he added.
The DOE has released its programs to be prioritized in the next three years to bring accessible, reliable, and affordable energy nationwide.
The energy department has its National Renewable Energy Program which aims to promote the development and optimal use of renewable energy in the country.
Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said DOE is committed to ensure that the rules and laws are being implemented in securing energy supply through competition access to bilateral markets, anti-monopoly measures, least-cost power, and the protection of the environment.
