Visayan Electric Reinforces Cebu Grid with Looped Substations, Smart Monitoring

Visayan Electric Co., the country’s second-largest distribution utility, is ramping up investments to reinforce the reliability of Cebu’s power supply through network upgrades, advanced monitoring technologies, and preventive measures against service interruptions.

At the Power Lunch, which was reported by Sunstar, on September 22, 2025, Nico Arancillo, assistant vice president for engineering and technical support, stated that the company has implemented a looped substation system, built 80 circuit kilometers of additional sub-transmission lines, and deployed smart devices with Scada-enabled remote monitoring to strengthen system resilience.

He added that Visayan Electric has rolled out semi-insulated “tree wires” and intensified vegetation management programs to help minimize outages caused by foliage and debris.

“Our commitment has always been to serve our community better. By building capacity, strengthening reliability and embracing digital innovation, we aim to deliver smarter and more sustainable power for Cebu,” Arancillo said.

The distribution utility, an AboitizPower subsidiary, has also expanded its underground distribution system with sections completed along Osmeña Boulevard and Fuente Osmeña, while new works are planned at the South Road Properties.

Visayan Electric today serves over half a million customers across a 674-square-kilometer franchise area covering the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay, and Naga, and the municipalities of Liloan, Consolacion, Minglanilla, and San Fernando.

This month, the company is celebrating its 120th anniversary with the launch of the “Legacy of Lights” exhibit at Ayala Center Cebu, running from September 22 to 28. The showcase features curated photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia retracing Cebu’s electrification journey and serves as a prelude to an upcoming coffee table book to be authored by Cebu historian and archaeologist Dr. Jobers Reynes Bersales.

“For 120 years, Visayan Electric has been a partner in Cebu’s journey, delivering reliable, safe and reasonably priced electricity,” said Anton Mari Perdices, AboitizPower’s chief operating officer for Distribution Utilities. “Our legacy is not measured only in poles and wires. It is measured in lives touched. Beyond energizing homes and industries, we empower dreams, build resilience and fuel Cebu’s development.”
