In a show of environmental commitment, the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) led a large-scale coastal clean-up at the PNOC Industrial Park (PIP) Construction Jetty last March 21st. This effort drew over 150 volunteers from various companies and partner organizations.
This initiative, which is part of PNOC’s corporate social responsibility program, had two goals in mind: Combat the growing concerns over marine pollution and promote environmental stewardship among stakeholders operating within and around the industrial park.
All the participants came from different backgrounds, ranging from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Natural Resources Development Corporation (DENR-NRDC), NPC Alliance Corporation, Petron, Team Philippines Energy Corporation, Orica Philippines Inc., Philippine Resins Industries, Inc., Servicio Filipino, Inc., EliteBlue Security Specialist, Inc., and Adriano Construction.
The volunteers’ united efforts collected more than 1,300 kilograms of waste. The majority of the debris consisted of expanded polystyrene foam, plastic bottles, other plastic materials, wood, and bamboo. Plastic waste continues to pollute our waters, posing risks to marine life and local ecosystems.
PIP Officer-in-Charge Domingo S. Inlong highlighted the benefits of collaboration in addressing environmental challenges. “Coastal clean-ups at the PIP Bataan are vital for preserving our shoreline and supporting marine biodiversity. These efforts help mitigate pollution from industrial plants and nearby communities,” he said.
PNOC’s initiative doesn’t stop at just collecting waste, as it also continues on as an educational platform, educating participants to adopt eco-friendly practices, reduce plastic consumption, and support recycling initiatives.
“Beyond clean-ups, we aim to foster environmental awareness, promote responsible waste disposal, and enhance the overall appeal of the park. Through collective action, we move closer to sustainable development and a better quality of life for the people of Mariveles.” added Engr. Inlong.
PNOC reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection, stating that more clean-up drives and sustainability programs are being planned to build on the momentum of this event. The company aims to strengthen partnerships with stakeholders and inspire broader community engagement in environmental conservation.
What other organizations should PNOC reach out towards in the future? What other initiatives can be taken in order to keep our waters clean?
