Watsons Philippines is ramping up its shift to renewable energy by expanding its solar power initiative, with 95 stores and all distribution centers in Luzon and Visayas now running on solar energy. As part of its broader commitment to sustainability, the retail giant is also set to convert an additional 30 stores and one more distribution center to solar power in 2025.

In a report published by Sunstar.com, the company said its solar energy initiative is part of its long-term strategy to lower operational costs, minimize environmental impact, and contribute to the country’s clean energy transition.

“Our commitment to sustainability drives us to integrate renewable energy into our operations, transforming how we power our stores and distribution centers. With 95 stores and all distribution centers around the country now running on solar energy, we are not only reducing our environmental footprint but also setting a benchmark for sustainable retail practices. This is just the beginning, and we are excited to expand these initiatives to create a greener future,” Watsons Senior Assistant Vice President for PR, Marketing & Sustainability Sharon Decapia said

The shift to solar energy has already made a measurable impact, with Watsons reporting a significant decrease in carbon dioxide emissions and a reduction in traditional energy consumption. The company also utilizes LED lighting, inverter air-conditioning units, and other energy-efficient technologies across its stores to further optimize energy use.

Additionally, Watsons’ Greener Store concept, launched in San Pedro, Laguna, highlights the retailer’s move toward sustainable and energy-efficient retail spaces. This model store incorporates solar energy and eco-friendly fixtures, reinforcing the company’s goal of reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.

As Watsons continues its solar energy expansion, the company remains focused on sustainability beyond energy efficiency. Future plans include exploring additional eco-friendly initiatives such as waste reduction programs, environmentally friendly packaging, and carbon offsetting strategies.

By scaling up its solar power program, Watsons Philippines sets a benchmark for sustainability in the retail industry, demonstrating how businesses can integrate renewable energy solutions into everyday operations.
