Three power generators have expressed intention to participate in the competitive selection process (CSP) for the Manila Electric Company’s (MERALCO) 1,200 megawatt (MW) baseload requirement.

In a report by the Manila Standard, First NatGas Power Corporation, led by the Lopez Group, South Premiere Power Corporation (SPPC), and Limay Power Inc. under San Miguel Corporation, expressed their interest in the CSP.

Earlier, the distribution company said that it was seeking bids for its 1,200 MW base load requirement to guarantee its customers’ uninterrupted supply.

This occurred after the Department of Energy’s (DOE) issuance of a certificate of compliance on the terms of reference (TOR) for the 15-year power supply agreement or agreements, scheduled to take effect upon approval by the Energy Regulatory Commission.

The TOR outlined that, in line with the DOE’s guidance on executing a Competitive Selection Process (CSP) for power supply incorporating indigenous natural gas as a transition fuel, there was a strong encouragement for power suppliers with natural gas-fired power plants to engage in the bidding process.

This CSP aims to meet MERALCO’s future capacity requirements.
