Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) subsidiary Atimonan One Energy Inc. anticipates converting its coal project in Quezon Province into a gas-fired power plant by October once they are granted proposal approval within the year, MGen President and CEO Jaime Azurin said

In a move to strive toward using green energy, MGen earlier announced that the Atimonan One Energy Project will be converted from coal power to liquefied natural gas (LNG) baseload supply with an ongoing Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) application for the development of a gas-fired power plant.

In a report by the Philippine Star, the MERALCO subsidiary also eyes investing PHP 175 billion to develop its 2,400-megawatt combined cycle gas turbine power project targeted to complete its first phase by 2026, followed by its second phase by 2029.

The said project also includes a floating LNG storage unit, LNG unloading facility, and LNG regasification system.

MGen targets to expand its renewable energy portfolio by 1,500 MW by 2030.
