Honda Philippines, Inc. (HPI) has taken its pursuit of sustainability a step further with the inauguration of its 1,056-megawatt (MW) rooftop solar power venture in collaboration with Skye Renewables.
The initiative, situated in HPI’s manufacturing facility in Tanauan, Batangas, is transitioning to its operational phase, marking a significant stride towards environmental stewardship.
HPI President Sayaka Arai-Hattori said the venture is a “crucial step towards achieving our global carbon neutrality goal by 2050.” She highlighted the project as a testament to HPI’s dedication to environmental accountability and its aspiration to foster a more sustainable future for stakeholders.
Skye Renewables Head of Philippines Gary Espino expressed the firm’s commitment to facilitating the energy transition across Asia and commended the collaboration with HPI.
Espino further explained their involvement with the project, detailing the installation of solar panels to harness solar energy. “This clean energy will power HPI’s operations during the day, and if needed, they can seamlessly switch to grid electricity when necessary,” he said.
The newly launched solar power venture involves 1,958 panels, each boasting a capacity of 540 watts. Leveraging the abundant sunshine in the Philippines, this technology is anticipated to fulfill at least 35% of HPI’s maximum daytime energy demand, translating to an annual clean energy utilization of 1,267 megawatt-hours (MWh).
This substantial reduction in reliance on fossil fuels is expected to yield significant environmental benefits.
Moreover, the solar initiative is projected to yield savings for HPI, given the typically lower expense of solar energy compared to traditional grid-purchasing power. Beyond financial implications, the project aligns with HPI’s sustainability strategy.
