BuhaWind Energy Philippines is set to advance its ambitious 4-gigawatt (GW) offshore wind energy projects following the government’s announcement to repurpose three key ports as logistics hubs.
In a report by Business World, PetroGreen Energy Corporation president and CEO Francisco G. Delfin Jr. said that the repurposing of the ports is seen as a significant boost for the country’s offshore wind industry.
Delfin added that connecting the Currimao Port with the BuhaWind project is pivotal in positioning the country as a major player not only in the regional market but also in the global arena.
BuhaWind, a joint venture between Denmark’s Copenhagen Energy and PetroGreen, is developing the 2,000-megawatt (MW) BuhaWind offshore wind farm in Northern Luzon, and the Currimao Port will be instrumental in the construction and operation of this project, providing critical logistical support.
In addition, BuhaWind is planning two more 1,000-MW offshore wind projects in Northern Mindoro and East Panay, slated for completion by 2031 and 2033. The Sta. Clara Port in Batangas will help with the Northern Mindoro development.
The Department of Energy (DOE) also announced that the Philippine Ports Authority is preparing detailed engineering designs to repurpose three strategic ports—Currimao in Ilocos Norte, and Batangas in Sta. Clara, and Jose Panganiban in Camarines Norte—because of the distance to high-potential offshore wind projects.
The DOE is targeting mid-2025 for its green energy auction, specifically for offshore wind projects. With 92 contracts already secured by 38 developers, the country is positioning itself to tap into a potential 66.101 GW of renewable energy, signaling strong momentum in offshore wind development.
