Alpas Pinas, a non-profit advocating for clean and reliable energy, highlighted the contributions of Filipino women in nuclear science during a media briefing held on March 7, 2025. The event, held in celebration of Women’s Month, brought together industry leaders to discuss the role of women in research, policy, and energy advocacy.

Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) Deputy Director Vallerie Ann Samson presented ongoing research in nuclear applications, including food safety, healthcare, and environmental protection at the briefing. She emphasized the crucial role women scientists play in these projects.

“At PNRI, we celebrate women and girls in this field who are not only shaping the future of PNRI but also inspiring the next generation of researchers, leaders, and innovators,” Samson said.

PNRI Director Dr. Carlo Arcilla reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to gender inclusivity, highlighting that women make up 46% of PNRI’s workforce. He also emphasized the importance of gender representation at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“We acknowledge the progress made, but there is still work to be done. It is crucial to ensure more balanced representation, especially at senior and policy-making levels,” Arcilla stated.

The event was also attended by Pangasinan 2nd District Rep. Cong. Mark Cojuangco, a known advocate for nuclear energy. He praised the contributions of women experts in pushing for nuclear power as part of the country’s energy mix.

“Women are championing nuclear science in the Philippines, and we are here to ensure that their work is backed by policies that will drive the country forward,” Cojuangco said.

Alpas Pinas Convenor Gayle Certeza concluded the event with a strong call to action.

“Nuclear science is about breaking barriers. The Philippines has proven that women can lead in this field, and it is our responsibility to support their journey toward a future powered by clean, affordable energy,” she said.

The event reinforced the growing role of women in nuclear science and energy advocacy, positioning gender inclusivity as a key driver of innovation and progress in the sector.

As more women continue to shape the future of nuclear science and policy, how can we further support and encourage young girls to pursue careers in STEM and nuclear research?
