Alternergy Holdings Corporation, through its wind subsidiary Alternergy Wind Holdings Corporation (AWHC), has secured approval from the Department of Energy (DOE) to develop a new onshore wind power project in Albay.
The DOE granted AWHC a Certificate of Authority (COA), allowing the company to explore and assess wind resources across multiple municipalities in the province.
Under the COA, AWHC has three years to complete pre-feasibility studies and secure necessary government permits. If proven viable, the project will be converted into a 25-year Wind Energy Service Contract.
Alternergy conceptualized the project after participating in the Albay Renewable Energy and Investment Summit in September 2024.
AWHC President Knud Hedeager welcomed the approval, emphasizing that the COA framework introduced by the DOE helps mitigate project risks and improve overall viability.
“The COA framework is a landmark policy initiative by the current DOE under Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla. It supports developers from the onset, thereby helping mitigate project risks and enhance overall project viability,” said Hedeager.
The Albay Wind Power Project spans 6,318 hectares and has the potential to generate at least 150 megawatts (MW) of wind energy.
The company is currently finalizing the construction of its Tanay and Alabat Wind Power Projects, with the Albay Wind Power Project marking its fifth wind energy initiative in the Philippines.
Alternergy, a pioneer in Philippine wind energy, co-developed the Bangui Bay Wind Farm in 2005 and the Pililla Wind Farm in 2015. The Albay project is part of its roadmap to achieving 500 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2026.
The expansion of wind energy projects in Albay aligns with the country’s push for sustainable and renewable power sources.
As Alternergy advances its clean energy initiatives, stakeholders are encouraged to support policies and projects that promote sustainable power solutions for future generations.
