Batangas is poised to become one of the country’s renewable energy hubs, with Alternergy Holdings Corporation (ALTER) clinching its second onshore wind project in the province. The Department of Energy (DOE) awarded Alternergy Wind Holdings Corporation (AWHC) a Certificate of Authority (COA) for a 150 MW wind project spanning 3,807 hectares across Batangas City and Lobo municipality, as announced at the recent Batangas Energy Summit.
This project, following a similar COA in Albay, positions Batangas as a key player in the Philippines’ renewable energy landscape. Beyond clean power, the initiative promises job creation and infrastructure development, aligning with Alternergy’s ambitious Road to 500 MW by 2026. The company, a pioneer in the sector, developed the Philippines’ first wind farm in Bangui Bay in 2005 and Southeast Asia’s first of its kind.
Under the COA, AWHC has three years to conduct pre-feasibility studies and secure permits. If viable, the project will transition into a 25-year Wind Energy Service Contract.
“Alternergy founders co-developed Bangui Bay wind farm in 2005, the first wind farm in the Philippines and the first throughout Southeast Asia,” the company noted, highlighting its track record. With ongoing projects in Tanay, Rizal, and Alabat, Quezon, Batangas and Albay will mark Alternergy’s fifth and sixth wind ventures.
Alternergy’s broader portfolio includes wind, solar, hydro, battery storage, and offshore wind, driven by a team of renewable energy advocates led by former energy secretary Vince Pérez. The company, listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange since March 2023, recently joined the PSE Industrial Index and paid Php 118 million in dividends to preferred shareholders, including the Government Service Insurance System, in December 2024.
