The Energy Development Corp. (EDC) is investing approximately PHP 3 billion to expand the capacity of its Palinpinon 1 geothermal power plant in Negros Oriental, thus reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and efficient clean energy.
As reported by PhilStar in an article, EDC, through its subsidiary Green Core Geothermal Inc. (GCGI), has applied for environmental clearance from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to upgrade the plant’s existing turbine system. The project involves replacing the current three 37.5-megawatt (MW) turbine generators with new 42-MW units. This will boost the facility’s total installed capacity from 112.5 MW to 126 MW.
“This upgrade is prompted by the fact that two of the turbine rotors are approaching the end of their asset life within two to three years,” GCGI said in a DENR filing.
According to the company, the expansion will not require additional land, changes in process technology, or increased steam usage. Emissions are expected to remain the same, as the enhanced turbine efficiency offsets the higher power output.
The PHP 3-billion investment covers costs associated with project planning, consultant engagements, due diligence, equipment procurement, and installation of the new turbine systems.
As part of the environmental review process, the DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau has scheduled a public scoping session on July 23 in Negros Oriental. This activity allows stakeholders to learn more about the project and raise initial concerns or inputs as part of the environmental impact assessment.
Originally developed by the National Power Corporation, the Palinpinon 1 plant has been supplying clean electricity to the national grid since 1983. It is one of several geothermal facilities operated by GCGI in the province.
