Quezon City powers first 8 schools with solar

Quezon City has energized its first eight public schools with solar power, a milestone in the city’s plan to convert 50 schools to renewable energy.

The installations—1,393 panels with a combined capacity of 800 kilowatt-peak (kWp)—are projected to save over PHP 8.5 million annually and benefit more than 28,800 students.

“By converting our city-owned facilities and public schools to renewable solar energy, we are taking concrete steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance our climate change mitigation goals,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

The schools now running on solar are Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo High School, Carlos P. Garcia High School, Commonwealth Elementary School, Manuel A. Roxas High School, North Fairview Elementary School, Novaliches High School, Quirino High School, and San Agustin Elementary School.

The program is managed by Quezon City’s Solar Technical Working Group, with technical support from the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF).

The initiative follows the city government’s earlier solarization of major facilities, including City Hall and three public hospitals—Novaliches District Hospital, Rosario Maclang Bautista General Hospital, and Quezon City General Hospital.
