Alsons accelerates solar, storage projects amidst rising Mindanao power demand

Alsons Consolidated Resources, Inc. (ACR) said it is accelerating the development of several renewable energy and battery storage projects as it prepares to support rising electricity demand across Mindanao and other parts of the country.

During its 2026 Annual Stockholder’s Meeting, the company stated that power demand in Mindanao is projected to increase by 12.34% compared to last year’s actual demand, driven by expanding economic activity and industrial growth in the region.

Citing National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) projections, ACR said electricity demand across the island is expected to continue increasing in the coming years, reinforcing the need for reliable and sufficient power supply.

In 2025, Mindanao peak demand exceeded 2,600 megawatts, while nationwide peak demand across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao surpassed 19,000 MW.

“As the economy grows, demand for reliable and sufficient power will continue to rise. Electricity remains essential in supporting industries, businesses, infrastructure, and communities, while also helping attract investments,” said Antonio Miguel B. Alcantara, CEO of the Alsons Power Group.

To help address rising demand, ACR said it continues expanding its renewable energy portfolio through solar, hydro, and battery energy storage initiatives.

Among its major renewable energy projects is the 75-megawatt alternating current (MWac) Bawing Solar Power Plant in General Santos City.

The company is also advancing the 98.7-MWac SPPC Solar facility in Sarangani, which involves the conversion of a former diesel-fired power plant into a renewable energy facility.

According to ACR, the first 45 MWac phase of the SPPC Solar project is among the winning projects under the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Auction Program Round 4 (GEAP-4).

ACR is likewise studying hybrid diesel and battery energy storage system (BESS) configurations for some of its conventional power plants in Zamboanga and Iligan.

The company said the hybrid systems are intended to improve operational flexibility, strengthen reserve market participation, and enhance grid reliability amid evolving power market conditions.

Beyond solar energy, ACR also highlighted its growing hydropower portfolio, including the 14.5-MW Siguil Hydro Power Plant in Sarangani, which began operations in 2024.

Supporting details from the company’s operational report also showed ACR continuing to expand participation in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), ancillary services, and retail electricity supply (RES) business.

Its RES unit, Alsons Power Supply Corporation (APSC), currently supplies 118 MW to retail customers backed by more than 500 MW of generation capacity from conventional and renewable sources nationwide.

“We have been actively advancing our renewable energy development program, conducting feasibility and interconnection studies for solar and integrated energy storage projects across General Santos City, Sarangani Province, and other locations in Mindanao and the Visayas,” said ACR Chairman Nicasio I. Alcantara.

ACR said it continues positioning its power portfolio to support long-term energy security, economic growth, and increasing electricity demand across Mindanao and beyond.

As electricity demand across Mindanao continues rising, how quickly can renewable energy and storage projects scale to support the region’s long-term energy security needs?
