The National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) has launched a re-greening initiative at the La Mesa Watershed Reserve in Quezon City, planting 200 native tree seedlings as part of its 25th anniversary celebration and broader sustainability efforts.
Dubbed the “25-Hundred Commitment,” the initiative was carried out on June 17 in partnership with the Manila Water Foundation and forms part of TransCo’s Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Strategy (CSRSS).
TransCo said the activity supports its goals on land conservation, environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.
Leading the activity were TransCo President and CEO Joseph Omar A. Castillo, Vice Presidents Atty. Noel Z. de Leon, Dinna O. Dizon, and Maria Theresa L. Laranang, along with Officer-in-Charge Atty. Dexter Egbert Alvin Roy S. Comiso and other employees.
Participants planted 200 Cupang (Parkia timoriana) seedlings within the La Mesa Watershed Reserve, a protected area that surrounds the La Mesa Dam and Reservoir, one of Metro Manila’s primary sources of potable water. The reserve also contains the largest remaining rainforest of its kind in the National Capital Region.
During the event, Castillo underscored the importance of protecting critical natural resources for future generations.
“Let us sustain this legacy by planting trees so that the La Mesa Reservoir may continue to serve our children and grandchildren through a safe, reliable, and sustainable water source,” Castillo said.
TransCo said the initiative is part of its continuing environmental restoration efforts and reflects the corporation’s commitment to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and sustainability.
As transmission utilities and energy companies expand their sustainability programs, how important are watershed and ecosystem restoration projects in supporting the long-term resilience of the country’s energy and water infrastructure?
