First Gen, Lopez Group volunteers remove 249 kg of waste from Manila wetland

More than 60 volunteers from First Gen Corporation and the Lopez Group removed nearly 249 kilograms of waste from the Las Piñas–Parañaque Wetland Park in a coastal cleanup drive aimed at supporting environmental protection and climate resilience efforts.

The activity, held on May 30 at Freedom Island as part of the Philippines’ Month of the Ocean celebration, gathered 63 employees and dependents through First Gen’s Employee POWER (EmPOWER) program. The initiative was conducted in partnership with nonprofit organization CORA and supported by the company’s Create for the Climate program.

Freedom Island forms part of the Las Piñas–Parañaque Wetland Park, an internationally recognized wetland that serves as a habitat for marine species and migratory birds while helping protect nearby communities from flooding, storm surges, and other climate-related impacts.

Volunteers collected a total of 248.8 kilograms of waste from the coastal area, contributing to efforts to reduce marine litter and protect one of Metro Manila’s remaining coastal ecosystems.

“True environmental stewardship moves beyond awareness into meaningful action. Through efforts like this, we enjoin our employees, communities, and other stakeholders to safeguard the essential ecosystems that sustain us,” said First Gen Vice President Shirley Cruz.

The cleanup activity also served as a lead-up to Philippine Environment Month and the annual Lopez Envi Festival in June.

First Gen, one of the country’s largest renewable energy producers, said the initiative aligns with its broader environmental stewardship and decarbonization goals. The company operates 1,764 megawatts of renewable energy capacity from geothermal, hydro, wind, solar, and battery storage facilities, supplying about one-third of the Philippines’ renewable electricity output.
