SNAP-Benguet wins EMB-CAR award for solid waste management

SN Aboitiz Power Benguet Inc. (SNAP-Benguet), has been recognized by the Environmental Management Bureau–Cordillera Administrative Region (EMB-CAR) for its solid waste management initiatives, underscoring the growing focus on environmental stewardship among power generation companies operating in the Philippines.

The renewable energy producer received the BADANG Excellence Award for Solid Waste Management during the  9th Cordillera Environmental Summit held in Baguio City on June 30.

The BADANG Excellence Awards recognize industries and institutions with outstanding environmental programs and best practices that contribute to sustainable development and environmental protection in the Cordillera region.

The awards cover environmental performance areas including hazardous waste management, wastewater treatment and water conservation, air quality management, solid waste management, and environmental information and education campaigns.

According to SNAP-Benguet, the recognition was based on its long-running environmental initiatives, including the operation of a material recovery facility that recovers recyclable materials and supports the waste management requirements of nearby communities.

The company also cited its implementation of color-coded waste segregation systems, installation of log booms and a semi-automated trash rack cleaning machine to collect floating debris in dam reservoirs, and regular clean-up drives.

SNAP-Benguet said these initiatives are implemented under its ISO 14001-certified environmental management system.

The company added that it has previously been recognized as a regional champion and national finalist in the Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan Awards and received recognition at the 2024 ASEAN Occupational Safety and Health Network Awards in Singapore for its occupational safety and health programs.

SNAP-Benguet operates the 112.5-megawatt Ambuklao and 140-MW Binga hydroelectric power plants in Benguet. Its parent company, SNAP, the joint venture between Scatec and Aboitiz Renewables, Inc. (ARI), also operates the 360-MW Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant, the 8.5-MW Maris hydro plant, and the 24-MW Magat battery energy storage facility.

The company said the latest recognition reflects its continued commitment to advancing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles through responsible environmental management and safe operations.
