BPI solar financing portfolio jumps 89% as home solar demand grows

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) said its solar financing portfolio grew by 89% in 2025, signalling rising consumer demand for rooftop solar systems as more Filipino homeowners seek to reduce electricity costs through renewable energy.

The growth comes a year after BPI launched its Solar Mortgage under its Green Solutions programme, which allows homeowners to finance solar panel installations by using their property as collateral. Existing BPI housing loan borrowers may also increase their loan to cover the cost of a solar installation instead of taking out a separate financing facility.

The bank’s portfolio expansion mirrors broader uptake of distributed renewable energy in the country. According to data from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), more than 22,000 customers nationwide have adopted rooftop solar systems under the government’s net metering programme.

“We are seeing a significant surge in consumer interest toward solar energy, directly reflected in the rising demand for specialized green financing solutions,” said Dex Cuajotor, BPI head of retail lending and bancassurance.

“This market shift validates our commitment to empowering Filipino households with accessible financial options as they transition toward more sustainable and cost-effective energy alternatives,” he added.

BPI said qualified homeowners can finance the installation through a Solar Mortgage, while existing housing loan clients may consolidate the additional borrowing into their current mortgage.

Applications may be filed through BPI branches, its website, or its virtual store after securing a quotation from a preferred solar installer.

The bank is also offering promotional terms for borrowers, including fixed interest rates starting at 5.99% for the first year, a free first property appraisal worth PHP 5,000, up to PHP 50,000 in waived bank fees, and zero cash-out financing for qualified applicants.

As an illustration, BPI said financing a PHP 1-million solar installation at a 5.99% fixed rate for the first year over a 10-year term would result in an estimated monthly amortisation of around PHP 11,090.
