AboitizPower subsidiary Therma Luzon, Inc. (TLI), in collaboration with the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (AFI) and the local government unit of Pagbilao, Quezon has launched the Giant Clam Conservation Project under the “Likas Kayang Hibasanan” initiative.
The project seeks to conserve endangered giant clams, locally known as Taklobo, promote marine biodiversity, and create sustainable livelihoods for the community.
The initiative will provide giant clams to local residents and members of the Samahan ng Mangingisda ng Banlisan at Pantoc (SMBP), equipping them with technical training to ensure the clams’ successful reproduction. The project aims to build local expertise in marine conservation while enhancing eco-tourism opportunities in Pagbilao.
“This is not just about livelihood; it is about protecting our oceans,” said Mayor Gigi Portes during the launch ceremony. She expressed gratitude to AboitizPower for its ongoing support, including its role in the Taklobo conservation effort.
The turnover of giant clams is scheduled for the first half of 2025, with warmer weather providing ideal conditions for their release.
As part of the project preparation, stakeholders conducted a benchmarking activity at the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI) in Bolinao, Pangasinan. Representatives from the Municipal Agriculture Office, Bantay Dagat of Pagbilao, SMBP, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, and TLI participated in the activity to observe best practices.
“This project empowers us to protect our marine environment while creating sustainable income opportunities for our community,” said SMBP President, Roger Canares.
Lou Jason Deligencia, AboitizPower AVP for Corporate Services, emphasized the initiative’s alignment with the company’s mission of balancing environmental stewardship with community development. “This project will protect our marine ecosystem, provide new livelihoods, and promote tourism in Pagbilao,” he stated.
