The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines’ (NGCP) 230 kilovolt line in Binan-Muntinlupa caught fire earlier today, causing the foundation on one of its towers to collapse.
“Due to the extent of the fire, the foundation of Tower 34 of the said line was weakened, causing the tower to lean. Fortunately, due to NGCP’s line redundancy system, there were no power interruptions,” NGCP said on its Facebook page.

NGCP personnel were at the site to assess the damage and check the safety perimeter, while aerial patrols evaluated the tower’s condition, they said.
The fire started broke out around 8:48 a.m. and reached the second alarm at 8:55. The Bureau of Fire Protection declared fire out at 9:15 a.m.
The fire reportedly damaged over 50 houses in Barangay Alabang, with residents claiming the agency has been asking them not to take residence around the tower.
Both the NGCP and BFP are coordinating on the matter. More details to follow.
NGCP is not doing Right of Way Maintenance! I do not fully blame LGUs for allowing illegal occupation of the ROW as NGCP is not doing it’s job. NGCP’s goal should be to have a Safe, Reliable Power. This will keep our homes comfortable and safe, keeps our businesses prospering and lastly keeps our industries and hospitals open and operating smoothly…
Our lives and livelihoods depend on the flow of safe and affordable power that’s there when we need it. And few things threaten flow as much as trees and other plants that grow too high or come too close to power lines and worst NGCP do not do regular ROW maintenance such that illegal construction on the ROW will be nipped at the bud.
NGCP should do their job in maintaining the ROW and work hard to keep trees, shrubs and illegal structures away from its power lines, towers and other transmission structures. NGCP should take the responsibility and not avoid the passing the bucket mentality.
