FPH executive receives sustainability award as firm highlights anti-coal advocacy

First Philippine Holdings Corporation (FPH) Chief Sustainability Officer Agnes C. de Jesus received the Pearl of Legacy Award for Environmental Governance from the Society of Sustainability Practitioners, Inc. (Sustainability PH) during the organization’s fifth anniversary celebration held April 29 in Iloilo City.

Sustainability PH said the award recognized de Jesus’ contributions to environmental governance, sustainability leadership, and systemic environmental reforms throughout her career. They also cited her role in demonstrating how businesses can support national goals through environmental science and social responsibility.

In accepting the award, de Jesus called on sustainability practitioners and advocates to “continue to be the conscience of their localities and help move our country forward.”

She also reminded practitioners that “as environmental and social issues become more complex, more connected and more consequential, sustainability’s integrative role will be more important than ever.”

The recognition comes as Lopez-led FPH continues to promote its long-standing climate and clean energy advocacy. According to the company, FPH declared 10 years ago that it would no longer build, develop, or invest in coal-fired power plants due to the fossil fuel’s significant carbon dioxide emissions.

FPH also highlighted the role of its energy arm, First Gen Corporation, in advancing clean and renewable energy. The company said First Gen currently operates 1,700 megawatts of renewable energy capacity from geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar facilities.

De Jesus has served as FPH’s chief sustainability officer since 2014. Prior to that, she held leadership roles at Energy Development Corporation (EDC), including senior vice president for environment and external relations and concurrent compliance officer.

As sustainability and climate governance gain greater focus in the corporate sector, will more Philippine companies adopt stronger long-term clean energy commitments?
