Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has asked power distributor Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) to cut down its system loss to five percent of electricity sales.
“If we reduce it from 6.5 [percent] to 5 [percent], the consumers will save about P3 billion a year,” Gatchalian told The Standard.
The senator said that the company should bring down its system loss further, even though Meralco brought it down to 6.5 percent last year.
Gatchalian, however, acknowledged Meralco’s investments in bringing down its system loss.
He added that the Senate committee on Energy should wait for the study by the Energy Regulatory Commission.
“The government has already paid for that and I think the results of the study will further enlighten the committee whether to pursue the two bills being proposed,” he said.
Recently, Gatchalian filed the Recoverable System Loss Act that aims to reduce the system loss cap as much as five percent.
