LNG Terminal Up, EERI Stalls

Luzon’s energy supply got a jolt of good news today as the Linseed Field Corporation’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal roared back to life, pumping out a solid 1,350 MW to bolster the region’s power stability, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced. South Premiere Power Corporation (SPPC) is also set to connect to the grid by 4:00 PM today. But the story takes a twist with Excellent Energy Resources Inc. (EERI), which remains offline, tangled up in unresolved issues with its 500 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), leaving its comeback in limbo and hinting at potential weak spots in the system.

The DOE noted that the weekend pause in operations at these facilities—jointly run by Meralco PowerGen, San Miguel Global Power, and Aboitiz Power—was crucial for major upgrades at the LNG terminal. This included progress on Linseed’s first onshore LNG storage tank, due to start up by the end of April 2025. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) synced the shutdown with a dip in demand, ensuring no red or yellow alerts flared up, a success backed by the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP).

While the LNG terminal’s return and SPPC’s imminent grid tie-in mark a step forward, EERI’s ongoing struggle casts a shadow. “EERI remains offline due to ongoing technical issues with its 500 kV gas-insulated switchgear, delaying its return to service,” the DOE stated, offering no timeline for resolution. The department is keeping watch and working to restore full capacity while holding the grid steady.

With the public urged to conserve energy to ease demand during this transition, EERI’s delay could be more than a hiccup—it might signal deeper vulnerabilities in Luzon’s power network. As the DOE tackles the issue, this mix of triumph and trouble keeps the stakes high.
