After facing backlash over alleged overcharging, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) will be releasing a new billing for the month of May based on actual meter reading of electricity consumption for the months of March, April, and May.
This after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) ordered the power distributor firm to show proof of basis in calculating the kilowatt-hour (kWh) consumption for Meralco consumers during the months of implementation of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).
ERC made the directive after hearing complaints from consumers claiming that the May billing was overpriced.
“Ang assurance lang namin, customers will only pay what they consumed. No more, no less,” Meralco was quoted in a statement.
Meralco added that consumers have the option to wait for the new billing before paying. As for those who already settled their bills, Meralco said that their system would “self-correct.”
“Yung iba naman na nakabayad na ang mangyayari doon ibabawas naman kung ano yung nabayad nila,” Meralco Spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga was quoted as saying.
