PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications, Inc. are expanding the use of renewable energy (RE) across more facilities to lower energy costs and strengthen sustainability efforts.
In a report by Business World, PLDT Vice-President and Sector Head for Property and Facilities Leo A. Gonzales said that the firm is investing more in renewable energy, with a focus on key facilities in Metro Manila.
PLDT shared that 24 of its facilities, including those operated by Smart, will transition to being powered by ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions, a subsidiary of ACEN Corporation, to support their renewable energy goals.
The switch to renewable energy is expected to significantly cut PLDT’s energy consumption, translating to about Php 6 million in yearly savings. In addition, the company projects nearly 21,000 tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will be eliminated annually as a result of this transition.
Among the 24 sites shifting to renewable energy are key facilities like PLDT’s integrated operations center in Makati, which plays a crucial role in managing 24/7 wireless network operations for both PLDT and Smart.
Additional business offices and infrastructure across Metro Manila and nearby provinces, including cities such as Antipolo, Las Piñas, Marikina, and Taguig, are also part of this transition, reflecting the company’s broader sustainability efforts.
PLDT is further expanding its use of renewable energy by incorporating solar, geothermal, and wind power into its facilities across the Visayas and Mindanao. This move reflects the company’s strategy to diversify its energy mix and lower carbon emissions.
PLDT’s First Vice-President and Chief Sustainability Officer Melissa V. Vergel de Dios underscored the firm’s focus on reducing fossil fuel dependence while integrating climate resilience measures into its business practices.
