SM Offices scales up renewable energy use across portfolio

SM Offices, the commercial property arm of SM Prime Holdings, Inc., has expanded its use of renewable energy (RE) across its office portfolio, thus positioning sustainability as a key driver of tenant value and business growth.

The SM Prime business unit now sources more than half of its operational power from certified renewable energy, spotlighting how clean energy adoption is transforming the country’s commercial real estate sector.

As of mid-2025, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with a combined capacity of 73 megawatts peak (MWp) have been installed across 48 malls and offices nationwide. The company said these installations contribute to lower emissions and more stable energy costs for both tenants and building operations.

Vice President and Head of SM Offices Alexis L. Ortiga said the company “not only supports but also goes beyond the Philippine government’s target of having 50 percent of the country’s power generation come from renewable sources by 2040.”

The government’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) 2020–2040, led by the Department of Energy (DOE), aims to raise the share of renewables in the power generation mix to 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.

SM Offices’ green initiatives extend beyond solar energy, with developments integrating sensor-enabled fixtures, efficient cooling systems, and LEED-certified design standards. Flagship projects such as ThreeE-Com and FourE-Com Centers in the Mall of Asia Complex, Aura Tower in Bonifacio Global City, Mega Tower in Ortigas, and North Towers in Quezon City have achieved LEED Gold certification. Meanwhile, One E-Com, Two E-Com, and Five E-Com are undergoing LEED O+M certification for sustainable building operations and maintenance.

Ortiga added that SM Offices’ approach “remains resilient by integrating sustainability initiatives into its core strategies,” citing that its properties’ proximity to residential areas helps reduce travel time and emissions while supporting a lower-carbon economy.
