AboitizPower unit completes decommissioning of diesel generator in Cebu

Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower) announced that its subsidiary, East Asia Utilities Corporation (EAUC), has completed the decommissioning and deregistration of its 12.4-megawatt diesel generator unit located at the Mactan Export Processing Zone 1 (MEPZ 1) in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

The Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP) confirmed that the deregistration of EAUC’s Diesel Generator Unit 1 took effect on October 30, 2025. Prior clearances were secured from the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) in line with DOE’s Implementing Guidelines on the Decommissioning and Mothballing of a Generating Plant.

AboitizPower said the decommissioning only covers one unit of EAUC’s facility, with its three other generating units remaining operational. EAUC, which began full commercial operations in 1998, continues to supply electricity to MEPZ 1 and the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).

EAUC decided to initiate the decommissioning process following a technical incident in May 2024, which, after evaluation by the company’s management, rendered the affected unit no longer viable for repair or continued operation.

AboitizPower reaffirmed its commitment to safe and compliant asset management as part of its ongoing operational initiatives.
