Terra Solar Philippines, Inc. (TSPI) has filed a request with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to build a transmission facility for its Php 200-billion solar power and battery energy storage project.
In a report by Business World, the company intends to establish point-to-point limited transmission facilities to link its solar project to the Luzon grid, as indicated in its ERC application.
TSPI stated that the connection through a bus-in system along the Nagsaag-San Jose 500-kilovolt (kV) Transmission Line is critical for the project’s commercial operations slated to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
The project included a 3,500-megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power plant and a 4,500-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage facility in Central Luzon, with full completion expected by 2027.
Once operational, the project is anticipated to supply clean energy to over two million households.
TSPI explained that after assessing various options, the bus-in connection to the transmission line emerged as the most cost-efficient and technically feasible solution.
The company proposed that the operation, service, and maintenance of the transmission facilities be handled by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), in line with previous ERC rulings on similar projects.
MGen Renewable Energy, Inc., the renewable energy unit of MERALCO PowerGen Corporation (MGen), holds a controlling interest in SP New Energy Corporation. MGen is a subsidiary of the Manila Electric Company (MERALCO).
In November, the MTerra Solar Project officially commenced construction following a groundbreaking ceremony.
TSPI collaborated with China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd. and Power Construction Corporation of China Ltd. to carry out the project’s construction.
Additionally, the company signed a Php 7.8-billion agreement with MERALCO Industrial Engineering Services Corp. for infrastructure development to connect the plant to the Luzon grid.
An allocation of approximately USD 116.9 million (roughly Php 6.8 billion) was set aside for offshore equipment needed for the project.
The MTerra Solar project will supply electricity under a 20-year, 850-MW mid-merit power supply agreement with MERALCO.
