SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) has officially broken ground on the second phase of its Magat Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at the Magat hydroelectric power plant in Ramon, Isabela.

“With the additional 56 MW of BESS projects across our plants and the launch of our integrated remote operations center, we are not only increasing the energy supply but also enhancing energy security and grid stability, in line with our long-term sustainability goals,” said SNAP President and CEO Joseph Yu.

The expansion of the Magat Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a 16-megawatt (MW) Phase 2 will boost the existing 24-MW facility, which has been operational since January 2024.

Once fully integrated, the 40-MW system will play a crucial role in enhancing grid reliability by supplying essential ancillary services, including regulating and contingency reserves.

Magat BESS Phase 2 is part of SNAP’s broader energy storage expansion plan, with additional BESS projects slated for development in the coming months. The company also recently signed an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) agreement with GEDI China Energy for a separate 40-MW Binga BESS facility at the Binga hydroelectric power plant in Itogon, Benguet.

Additionally, SNAP also unveiled its Integrated Remote Operations Center (iROC) at the Magat hydropower complex during the groundbreaking event. The iROC will provide real-time, centralized monitoring and control of SNAP’s five hydroelectric facilities in Isabela and Benguet, optimizing plant operations and improving response times.

Construction of the Magat BESS Phase 2 is set to begin in the first half of 2025, with commercial operations expected in the first half of 2026. The project will be financed by the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and China Banking Corporation, while BPI and BDO Unibank will fund the Binga BESS project.
