AboitizPower, through its subsidiary Therma Marine Inc. (TMI), has broken ground on its second hybrid Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Mindanao — a 48-megawatt project to be integrated into its Mobile 2 oil-fired power facility in Nasipit.
Set for commissioning by Q2 2026, the facility marks another key step in AboitizPower’s push to modernize grid support infrastructure, enabling faster and more flexible responses to demand fluctuations through ancillary services. It follows the company’s earlier success with the Philippines’ first hybrid BESS at TMI Mobile 1 in Maco, Davao de Oro.
“Once completed, the Nasipit BESS project will help enable more grid stability and support the growing share of renewable energy in our grid. It’s a smart solution for a smarter energy landscape,” said Ronaldo Ramos, COO for Operated Assets at AboitizPower’s Transition Business Group.
The hybrid setup combines oil-fired generation with battery technology, allowing the plant to quickly inject power into the grid — critical in stabilizing frequency and maintaining service reliability, especially in island grids like Mindanao’s.
The groundbreaking was attended by Agusan del Norte Governor Maria Angelica Rosedell Malbas Amante, Vice Governor Enrico Corvera, Nasipit Mayor Roscoe Democrito Borja Plaza, and partner contractors from China’s Shandong Electric Power Engineering Consulting Institute.
As the Philippines targets a more balanced and sustainable energy mix, projects like the Nasipit BESS underscore the role of hybrid systems in bridging legacy baseload power with renewable integration.
