Daiichi Properties Partners with Shell Energy Philippines to Power Buildings with Renewables

Daiichi Properties has taken a giant leap toward a more sustainable future by partnering with Shell Energy Philippines, the retail electricity supplier of Shell in the country, to power its office buildings with renewable energy. The agreement, which took effect in December 2024, and was posted about on the company’s official website, reflects the company’s growing commitment to environmental responsibility and climate resilience.

This partnership couldn’t have arrived at a greater time, as office buildings account for a substantial portion of global carbon emissions and energy demand. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, the real estate sector contributes approximately 37% of global CO₂ emissions and 34% of energy use. In the ever-rising energy demanding environment of the Philippines developers are uniquely positioned to help lead the transition to low-carbon solutions.

Through its agreement with Shell Energy Philippines, Daiichi will be sourcing electricity from a diverse mix of renewable sources, including solar, hydropower, and geothermal facilities. Shell Energy, emphasized that collaborations like this are essential to accelerating the clean energy transition in the commercial property sector.

The shift begins to cover Daiichi Properties’ Grade A office buildings in key business districts such as Bonifacio Global City and Ortigas Center. In the future, the company plans to continue sourcing renewable energy for all its upcoming developments, making sustainability a core feature of its operations moving forward.

For Daiichi, this move is not only about compliance or optics, it’s about the long-term impact. Company President Charmaine Uy explained that integrating renewable energy into building operations is a critical part of reducing environmental impact and supporting climate-resilient communities. The agreement is expected to offer significant benefits to tenants as well, enabling them to meet their own environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals while also enhancing their operational efficiency and brand credibility.

Beyond just energy sourcing, Daiichi employs a range of environmentally responsible practices. These include water conservation systems, the use of low-impact construction materials, and structural designs that improve resilience against natural disasters. Several of its properties have achieved internationally recognized certifications such as LEED, WiredScore, and the WELL Health-Safety Rating. The company also works with host communities to implement eco-friendly programs that extend its impact beyond the buildings themselves.

Uy noted that while Daiichi may not have the largest market footprint, it has consistently aimed to raise the standard for sustainability in the real estate sector. The company’s vision is one of long-term value and not just for today’s tenants and investors, but for future generations. As part of that vision, it is encouraging fellow developers to consider renewable energy not as an emerging trend, but as the new standard.
