The Philippines has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Saskatchewan, a province in western Canada, to collaborate on clean and sustainable energy solutions, Saskatchewan.ca reports. The agreement, signed on June 5, 2025, strengthens bilateral cooperation in energy innovation, nuclear power, and workforce development.

“This MOU is a significant milestone in our 75-year relationship and a manifestation of our shared commitment to building resilient, sustainable, and inclusive energy systems that support long-term economic growth,” said Andrelita Austria, Ambassador of the Philippines to Canada.

Saskatchewan brings extensive experience in clean energy technologies, while the Philippines continues to explore nuclear power as part of its long-term energy strategy. The MOU outlines cooperation in technology development, research and innovation, workforce training, and engagement with Indigenous and community stakeholders.

“Saskatchewan is critical to energy security, not just here at home, but across the globe,” said Saskatchewan’s Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding. “This MOU is another positive step toward our regions’ shared energy security goals. With Saskatchewan’s expertise in clean energy, paired with the Philippines’ strategic exploration of nuclear power, we have laid the groundwork for a strong partnership on advancing sustainable energy solutions.”

Potential joint initiatives include assessing the feasibility of small modular reactors (SMRs) in both regions and developing educational and exchange programs in nuclear engineering, smart grids, and energy storage systems.

The collaboration aligns with Saskatchewan’s broader international trade strategy, supported by its global network of offices—including one in Singapore that serves Southeast Asia.
