NIA Launches Quirino’s First Solar-Powered Pump Irrigation System

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has officially launched Quirino province’s first solar-powered pump irrigation system, which is located in Aglipay. The project is expected to benefit over 15 farming households and irrigate more than 20 hectares of farmland.

The initiative, as reported in an article by the Philippine Information Agency, supports the Marcos administration’s broader agenda to modernize agriculture and ensure long-term food security. It also demonstrates NIA’s commitment to promoting sustainable and cost-effective irrigation solutions in remote communities.

The newly installed solar pump system utilizes a pressurized pipe network to distribute water more efficiently. This removes the need for diesel-powered pumps or dependence on erratic rainfall. According to the NIA, the use of solar energy not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also lowers farmers’ input costs. This makes agricultural production more sustainable and more economically viable.

Beyond the immediate benefits to the local farming community, the project aligns with Quirino province’s development vision of becoming a “Prime Agro-Industrial and Eco-Tourism Destination in the North.” By enhancing agricultural productivity and infrastructure, the solar-powered system also supports the province’s grander goals for integrated rural development.
