The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has fully restored power transmission services across the Visayas Grid following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu last week.
In an update, NGCP said the Daanbantayan–Tabango 230-kilovolt (kV) Line 2, which includes the submarine cable linking Cebu and Leyte, was successfully energized at 9:38 a.m. on October 3. The company deployed more than 60 personnel to carry out restoration activities after the quake damaged facilities at its Daanbantayan Substation near the epicenter.
Power transmission in the Visayas was normalized as early as October 1, even as repairs on other transmission lines continued.
The Compostela–Daanbantayan 230kV Line 1 was subsequently restored on October 7 at 2:18 a.m. and is now operating in parallel with Line 2. NGCP said restoration work is still ongoing for the Daanbantayan–Tabango 230kV Line 1, the only remaining line on outage.
According to NGCP, the remaining line provides n-1 contingency support to the backbone transmission corridor that has already been restored and does not affect any power customers.
“NGCP is working round the clock to ensure the stability and normal grid operations in Visayas following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake. Our teams on the ground continue their restoration and repair works to bolster the reliability of the transmission network,” the company said.
NGCP also advised the public to coordinate with their respective distribution utilities and electric cooperatives for localized power interruptions. It said it remains on alert as aftershocks continue to be recorded.
