SPC Power Corporation confirmed that its wholly owned unit, SPC Island Power Corp. (SIPC), has signed contracts to develop two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Panay and Bohol, the company said in a clarification filed with the Philippine Stock Exchange. The projects comprise a 100-megawatt-hour (MWh) BESS in Dingle, Iloilo, and a 60 MWh BESS in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
SIPC said the supplier for the BESS units is Beijing Hyperstrong Technology Co., Ltd., while the engineering, design and construction work will be done by China Communications Services Philippines Corporation. The total investment for both projects is PHP 2.4 billion.
The company gave target implementation dates of October 17, 2025 for the Panay project and October 30, 2025 for the Bohol project. Expected commercial operation dates are for June 30 and July 13, 2026, respectively.
SIPC executive vice president James N. Villareal was quoted saying, “We are pleased to partner with Hyperstrong and China Communications Services to deliver these energy storage projects, underscoring our commitment to support the country’s RE development with sufficient energy storage capacity for grid stability.”
SIPC said the BESS installations are intended to “reinforce the company’s position in the Philippine renewable energy market; to generate revenue through various sources, enhance the company’s energy storage capacity, support grid stability, and contribute to the Philippines’ transition to a more sustainable energy mix.” The company added that the projects are expected to have a positive impact on its operations and financial condition.
What do these BESS projects mean for grid planning, ancillary services markets, or local supply chains? Let’s discuss.
